She is Salzburg’s lifesaver for the year 2024: When a three-year-old boy floated lifeless in the water at the Watzmanntherme in Berchtesgaden at the beginning of November, Sabina Maurer from Altenmarkt was immediately there and brought him back to life. “Krone” and ORF honor her and other heroes.
It was supposed to be a relaxing wellness trip: Sabina Maurer from Altenmarkt went to the Watzmanntherme with her family at the beginning of November. “I was just in the sauna and then went back to the lounge chair,” the registered nurse recalled. But suddenly cries for help were heard. “The shouting was very bitter. “I knew immediately that it was serious now,” she says.
At that moment, her ten-year-old daughter came running up the stairs: “She said: ‘Mom, please come, you are the only one who can save this now.'” Very lucky for the little one from Hallein and his family, Sabina Maurer was on the scene was an absolute professional: she works in nursing at the retirement home in Wagrain and also helps as an emergency assistant at the Red Cross – while minutes are essential.
The three-year-old boy had several guardian angels
The boy had several guardian angels. Two girls found him floating lifeless in the adventure pool. When Maurer came by, he was completely blue. “I put the child on the floor and got to work right away.” The lifeguard helped. “He vented, I pushed. “We then installed an oxygen supply,” says the lifesaver.
For the next few anxious moments, she focused completely on the child: “We made sure we could have a cycle together.” The little one sank again, but was immediately brought back by his guardian angels. Maurer: “It is a situation in which you simply function.” Only later did the helpers really realize that life was hanging by a thread.
“There was no time to lose at that moment”
Later the swimmers left and the Bavarian Red Cross was present. The little patient was flown to the University Hospital of Salzburg and put into an artificial deep sleep. After a few days, mom and dad were able to cuddle him in the normal department. It is thanks to Maurer’s courageous intervention that the boy recovered so quickly.
Proud? “Of course it is a good feeling if you can help,” says the nurse, happy with the award from ORF and “Krone”. Lifesaver 2024 – Austria’s Heroes: Gala on Monday, December 16 at 9:15 PM ORF 2.
