About 1,000 Wagner fighters are still in Belarus. The British Ministry of Defense reported this on Sunday. The Russian private army would likely train Belarusian soldiers and security forces (see video above).
It was said that they would not be used for border protection tasks or the internal security of the former Soviet republic. The Wagner Group fighters came to the country in June 2023 after mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin failed in an uprising against the Russian military leadership. According to the British Ministry of Defense, about 8,000 fighters were originally in Belarus, an ally of Russia.
Support the Russian war
“The continued presence of the Wagner mercenaries will almost certainly also benefit the Russian war effort,” the ministry said. This will force the wartime enemy to maintain defensive positions and personnel along the northern border with Belarus to protect themselves from future incursions.
Russian forces have recently stepped up their attacks on targets along the fronts in Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian military, this will likely continue until the presidential elections in Russia. “It is extremely important for Putin at this time to divert people’s attention from the problems at home,” said Ivan Timochko, chairman of the Ukrainian Army Reservists Association. With new attacks and conquests, the Russian president shows that he has the situation under control and that the army can carry out attacks.
“Silent mobilization”
Timochko speaks of a maximum of 500,000 Russian soldiers in Ukraine. Losses would be replaced by “silent mobilization.” Even migrants are sent to the front. The information could not be independently verified.
