Fraudsters were once again successful with the so-called ‘police trick’. A Tyrolean (88) from Imst fell victim to the criminals. Particularly egregious: in the story that the man’s daughter was involved in an accident, the perpetrators had the man hand over valuables twice. The Tyrolean even drove all the way to Hungary for one of the transfers.
According to police, the 88-year-old was contacted on January 31 around 5 p.m. The perpetrators posed as police officers and claimed that the daughter had been involved in an accident in which a child also died. The crooks demanded a five-figure sum as security. Otherwise they threatened to make the accident public. This apparently caused a huge shock for the Tyrolean.
“The 88-year-old offered to give up his collection of gold coins as bail. The perpetrators agreed and a transfer was arranged in Innsbruck that same evening,” the police reported. Ultimately, the perpetrators had the senior driven to Upper Austria, where the transfer took place. But that is not enough.
The second transfer took place in Hungary
On the way back, the fake officers contacted the man again. They claimed that another accident victim had died. Once again, the perpetrators demanded a six-figure sum. The pensioner again took jewelry and other valuables from the safe. The Tyrolean left again on February 1. This time he was even led to a gas station behind the Austrian border in Hungary, where the transfer took place.
When the daughter contacted the 88-year-old, the fraud was discovered. The damage suffered by the pensioner is in the six-figure euro range.
