Halfway through retirement – Dental Association warns: Too few young people!

Date:

The Austrian Dental Association (ÖZAK) warned on Monday of supply bottlenecks in their region. Ten percent of health insurance positions are already unfilled and in the coming years half of dentists will reach retirement age. Young people often see their future elsewhere. The ÖZAK now calls on the Ministry of Health and the ÖGK to take action.

There was criticism from ÖZAK on Monday. She warns that many dentists will be lost in the coming years.

Studies: No reservations for residents
The situation is further aggravated by the fact that for several years now, 75 percent of study places in the admission process for dental studies are no longer reserved for nationals, as was previously the case.

Universities are now training more and more future dentists from German-speaking EU countries, whose effectiveness in providing care in Austria is questionable. At the same time, young people prefer the elective dentistry over the health insurance contract.

“Safe dental care”
This “should give the social insurers something to think about,” says Martin Hönlinger, health insurer of ÖZAK, who criticizes the fact that they are trying to lure dentists into a currently unattractive health insurance system with an entry bonus and force them into it. tie. instead of making health insurance contracts more attractive.

The Ministry of Health and the ÖGK must now work together with the Dental Association to “secure dental care in the country in the long term,” according to the ÖZAK appeal.
