Carinthian speed skating star Vanessa Herzog had a terrifying encounter with the locals during her African safari. Her husband Tom remained calm.
A different kind of adrenaline rush! After the season, Vanessa Herzog went on safari in Namibia with her husband Tom. “We already have experience in the area and enjoy meeting animals,” Tom emphasizes.
Respect for the elephants
This year the couple did the same thing on their own, together in an all-terrain vehicle. “We saw around 80 lions and 200 elephants – once we were surrounded by two herds of elephants and the animals suddenly charged towards us – passing within arm’s length of our car. “We weren’t afraid, but we were respectful,” says Tom.
Shocked by three poachers
An unplanned encounter with poachers was very different. “We were watching lions – then three locals came up to us with Kalashnikovs. Vanessa filmed her and after the initial shock I quickly drove away.”
At the camp, rangers confirmed from the video: “There were known poachers there. We were fortunate that there was no confrontation.”
