Less accidents: watch the front feathers

Date:

A new study by TU Graz shows that lights at the front of cars can make dangerous situations harmless and prevent accidents. The research results must also show car manufacturers the potential of the green brake light.

Up to 17 percent of the accidents could be prevented – and with a simple measure. Ernst Tomasch with his research team at the Institute for Vehicle Safety from the Technical University of Graz proves scientifically what sounds like. The idea of the pre -female lights for cars has been around for a long time, but it has not yet been implemented.

“We have analyzed 200 real accidents through our database and reconstructed with a simulation program,” explains Tomasch. The results recently appeared in the Vehicles Specialist Magazine: 7.5 to 17 percent of the accidents would be history because of the extra brake lights – in 25 percent of the collisions they would also have caused a lower impact speed.

Green glowing you indicate whether a vehicle inhibits or starts again. This would have many benefits, especially at intersections: “For example, the opposing traffic would be better recognized on the left,” says Tomasch. Other studies show that crossing the zebra can become harmless for pedestrians. And side brake lights, in a similar place such as the rotation signals, are also conceivable.

So far, cars with the new lamp have only traveled for test purposes in Slovakia in real road traffic, but the great potential has made the new Graz study clear. And conversations with car manufacturers will probably run in the background.
