57 percent feel disturbed by their neighbors. This is the result of the ‘Living and Living’ research by immowelt.at. Those surveyed are most annoyed by noise caused by arguments (19 percent), pets such as barking dogs and cigarette smoke (16 percent each).
This is followed by loud garden tools (14 percent), noisy or playing children in the garden or yard (14 percent), objects left in the stairwell (nine percent) and party noise (nine percent). Decorations and sex noises (four and two percent respectively) bother relatively fewer people.
Differences by gender and age
A total of 502 people aged 18 and over were interviewed. Women are slightly more tolerant than men. About one in two people (52 percent) feel disturbed by their neighbors, while among men this is more than six in ten (62 percent).
There are also different views in different age groups. Among people over 60, less than every second person (47 percent) is annoyed by their neighborhood, with pets playing the biggest role. However, among the 30 to 59 generation, almost two-thirds (63 percent) are annoyed by troublemakers.
Together, more harmonious in the country
Another factor is the size of the location. Compared to the rural population, more people in big cities find their neighborhood annoying. “Less densely built-up apartment complexes and greater distances between houses, together with the proximity to nature, create a calmer atmosphere,” says the immowelt.at broadcast. The portal is an online marketplace for rental and owner-occupied properties in Austria.
