You have to experience a particularly unpleasant and unwanted travel adventure relatively often in Europe. Because airline passengers are mainly concerned about their checked luggage at local airports.
In 2023, an average of 10.6 pieces of luggage per 1,000 passengers were lost, damaged or arrived late on the continent. This is evident from data from air transport service provider Sita, which the Airhelp portal points out.
Asian airports the best
According to Sita, there were significantly fewer baggage issues in the other two traffic regions observed, with just three incidents per 1,000 passengers in Asia and 5.8 incidents in North America. Worldwide, this results in an average value of 6.9 cases per 1,000 passengers.
About 36 million pieces of luggage were affected worldwide
The most common reason for baggage accidents, accounting for 46 percent, are errors in transferring baggage from one plane to another, Sita reports. Only one in twenty pieces of luggage initially reported missing remained permanently missing, 77 percent arrived late and 18 percent were damaged.
In absolute figures, there were problems with 10.6 million pieces of luggage in Europe in 2023. There were 36.1 million pieces of luggage worldwide. According to the Sita report, the number was higher in 2008 with 36.9 million pieces of missing luggage. At that time, with 2.48 billion passengers, less than half as many people traveled by plane as in 2023, with 5.2 billion. Baggage security has therefore been improved in the long term.
