He’s the richest person in the world, but there’s one thing Elon Musk hasn’t been able to buy – at least until now: insight into the biggest government secrets of his space company SpaceX. For good reasons.
Hundreds of thousands of private defense contractors in the United States have access to government secrets as part of their work. Their security clearances are the same as those of government employees and generally include three levels: confidential, classified and top secret.
More than 400 employees of SpaceX, which has been working with national security agencies since Musk founded it in 2002, also have access to so-called sensitive information — the government’s name for secrets about how information is collected and where it comes from.
A smaller number of the space company’s employees even have access to secrets that the government considers even more sensitive, known as “Special Access Programs.” Only one person apparently does not know what secrets SpaceX sends into space for the US military and secret services: Elon Musk.
