It was cock dark, the view zero. Two chicken men from the Linz Professional Fire Brigade nevertheless ventured into the channel under a power plant on the Traun (Upper Austria) to look for a missing employee. Successful! The brave mission was followed.
Nightmare for every diver: alone, without display and orientation and no way to appear! This happened with an approximately 30-year-old employee who worked with a colleague at the Traunwehr small hydroelectric power plant on the so-called diffuser.
With normal company this ensures that the power slows down. The Froschmann, equipped with a compressed air bottle, lost contact with his colleague and then his lamp, and to make things worse in the wrong direction – ie in the power plant.
To hear voice from within
While he was looking for a way to appear, his colleague came back to the surface and raised the alarm. “He wanted to go back to look for our colleagues. Fortunately we could prevent this,” says Johannes Metzger, who led the use of the Linz Professional Fire Brigade. If you first had to go off the worst, it was a big relief when the voice of the missing person could be heard.
He had succeeded in appearing in the power plant and to feel himself. “However, the recovery from outside was impossible,” said Metzger. So two fire brigade divers ventured under water in the dark, searched the power plant about 25 meters in the underground canals and discovered the missing person.
Shock, but otherwise unharmed
On a belt tense by the rescuers, the trio of the power plant came out again, where the relief about the successful rescue was great. Fortunately, apart from a good shock, the missing diver remained intact.
