After Ukraine won the song contest this year, the discussion is now underway where the colorful music spectacle could take place. Because right now it seems unthinkable to hold such an event in the war-torn country. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson sees it differently. After his visit to Kiev, he spoke out in favor of holding the Eurovision Song Contest in Ukraine.
“The fact is, they won it and they deserve to have it,” Johnson said in an interview on Saturday. During a short visit to Kiev on Friday, he saw with his own eyes that the city was already much busier than a few weeks ago, according to the conservative politician. “Kiev or any other safe Ukrainian city would be a fantastic location,” Johnson said, adding: “It’s a year, a year! It’ll be fine.”
Ukraine would host for the third time
In mid-May, the Ukrainian group Kalush Orchestra won the 66th ESC in Turin with the song “Stefania”. This was the third time the Ukrainians had won the right to host next year, having previously hosted in 2005 and 2017.
However, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced on Friday that it would begin talks with the BBC in the UK about the event over security concerns related to Russia’s nearly four-month war in Ukraine. The Briton Sam Ryder had come second in Turin.
