Storm surges expected – Cancelled! Extreme weather also prevents increases

Date:

So now: the extreme weather conditions of the coming days and especially the forecasts for the weekend make it impossible to let the Aufsteirern Festival go ahead. Austria’s largest folk culture festival is cancelled.

At exactly 11:25 it was clear: the Aufsteirernweekend was literally not going to happen this year. The organizers simply had no other choice. The forecasts for the weekend have deteriorated dramatically again. In addition to the rain, it is mainly the strong wind that makes it impossible to carry out the event. Wind gusts of up to 100 km/h are predicted for Saturday and Sunday in Graz.

“The extreme weather conditions and the The persistent strong wind makes it impossible to hold the event safely. Even a safe journey for our guests cannot be guaranteed under these circumstances,” explains organizer agency iVents. The safety and well-being of all participants and visitors, but also employees, has the highest priority.

Further deterioration of the weather
The erratic weather is of course affecting the whole of Styria. The newly formed state crisis committee met again in the morning to clarify further steps. “According to the current forecasts, it unfortunately looks like things will get even tougher,” says Harald Eitner, head of the state disaster management department. Accordingly, the snowfall limits will drop on Saturday night, especially in the Ennstal and the upper Murtal down to the valley areas. “On Saturday, there will probably be snow roads here. If you consider that most people are still using summer tires, you can imagine the consequences.”

The expert therefore calls for “unnecessary car journeys to be avoided, especially in Upper Styria”. Trucks in particular must adhere to this. “If a truck gets stuck, important connecting roads can be closed immediately,” Eitner explains.
