Against all odds, a German couple wanted to climb the summit of the Gerlossteinwand in Hainzenberg (Schwaz district) on Friday. The duo was surprised by heavy snowfall at the start of the hike, but continued the hike anyway. The mountain rescue service from Zell am Ziller had to rescue the two from the mountain hours later.
A hike by a German couple (29 and 28 years old) on Friday around lunchtime was probably not particularly well thought out. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, the two wanted to go from the Gerlossteinbahn mountain station to the top of the Gerlossteinwand.
Halfway up, the duo was surprised by the large amounts of fresh snow. Instead of abandoning the hike and turning back, they continued their journey and reached the summit around 1:45 p.m.
But that’s not enough. Despite the heavy snowfall and about 50 centimeters of fresh snow, they decided to descend via the Heimjöchl. “However, when the weather and terrain conditions continued to deteriorate, they returned to the Gerlossteinwand and sought shelter in a nearby, dilapidated mountain hut,” the police said.
Bad equipment
In addition, they were both lightly dressed and also insufficiently equipped. That is why they made the emergency call. The two were rescued by the mountain rescue service of Zell am Ziller, slightly hypothermic, and brought to the valley.
