With wind peaks of 160 km/h, St. Radegund at the foot of the Schöckl in Styria was at the mercy of brutal natural events like no other community on Sunday: the power went out, houses had to be evacuated – and the primary school lost its roof.
“It is a major catastrophe. 50 years ago we had the flood in St. Radegund, 15 years ago the storm ‘Paula’. And now they both came within three months,” says mayor Hannes Kogler (ÖVP). He is standing in front of the community’s primary school, which best illustrates the scale of the events. In June, the building had to be demolished due to severe flooding. Over the past two months, replacement containers have been built and classes were supposed to start there on Monday. But on Sunday evening, the storm tore the roof off the primary school – what was left was a spectacle of destruction.
