Vorarlberg is the “land of volunteering”. In his new series, author Robert Schneider highlights people who are committed to helping others. He recently met Elke Fitz.
A sparkling red rickshaw stands in front of the industrial estate. For a moment I feel as if I have been transported to India, but I am in Lustenau. The active Elke Fitz is waiting for me in the office. At the moment she is treating herself to an espresso from the coffee machine. She is a direct person, does not beat around the bush, does not waste time with expectant polite sentences, speaks as she pleases. We will talk to each other on a first name basis in a moment. In 2015 Elke Fitz founded the association ‘Cycling without Age’. It was a very simple but incredibly charming idea. She wanted to give back the joy of outdoor life to people who can no longer get out into the fresh air because they are older, need help or are weak. “We give our seniors the right to have the wind in their hair”, is the motto on their homepage.
