The Styrian fire brigade has been under control for days – again. Already on Monday, the record number of storms from last year will be surpassed. The Annette low also caused some records.
Some unpleasant superlatives can be traced back to the consequences of Tief Annette. In Mariazell, for example, widespread snow cover was recorded earlier than ever before this weekend. On Graz’s local mountain, the Schöckl, hurricane winds of 160 km/h were measured. Also an absolute top value!
Rain showers continue
And even though the situation in Styria has largely eased, people are still looking at the sky with concern in the coming hours: “There could be problems again in Thörl, Mariazell or Kapfenberg,” says Styrian fire department spokesman Thomas Meier. Too much rain would not be good.
Evacuation tent remained empty
The situation is also still tense in the municipality of St. Barbara im Mürztal: “We worked until late at night. For a short time it looked as if some residents would have to be evacuated, but that was not the case,” says Robert Pusterhofer, spokesman for the fire department for the region, relieved. Overnight accommodations for up to 100 people were set up, but thankfully they remained empty. A total of 500 members have been deployed in this region alone in the past two days.
There was also caution across the country about the risk of flooding: water levels and flow rates fell on Monday morning at the measuring points of most rivers in Styria.
The light came back on
The national electricity supply situation also improved: on Monday morning, “only” around 800 households were without power, according to Energie Steiermark.
However, it is already clear that the storm record year 2023 will be surpassed again this year: “Last year we counted a total of 5,953 storm incidents in Styria, this year it is already 5,853,” says Thomas Meier to “Krone”. The missing 100 will probably be done on Monday.
This continues a trend that has been going on for years: “In 2022 there were 2,660 storm operations, in 2021 we had to deploy 1,222,” says Meier.
