Health Study – These Concerns Are Depriving Us Austrians of Our Sleep

A fifth of Austrians are constantly worried, while the same number of people live without worries. 30 percent of respondents said they were more anxious than a year ago. Worries about health, finances and the future are the most common reasons that also cause poor sleep.

The current health survey by Wiener Städtische* provides insightful results about the sleep and worry patterns of Austrians. The majority sleep only five to seven hours a night and only ten percent feel very fresh afterwards.

A fifth feels little recovery. According to the research, longer sleep – around 7.5 to 9 hours – would lead to more regeneration. Moreover, many people are worried.

  • Worries affect them too mental health which has deteriorated slightly compared to last year. Nevertheless, the majority continue to assess their mental state positively. The story is similar for physical health: more than a quarter felt worse in the past year. Almost every second person regularly uses prescribed medication. However, 16 percent have improved their physical well-being.
  • Vaccinations are viewed positively by the majority (60 percent). However, there are differences depending on the region of residence and the level of education: scepticism is greater in rural areas and among people with a lower level of education. A quarter of the population has become more sceptical about vaccinations after the pandemic.
  • Almost a quarter of the Austrian population is now more negative about vaccinations than before the Corona wave. In the case of one another pandemic According to the survey, 48 percent would get vaccinated, but almost 30 percent would rule out vaccination – women even more often than men.
  • What that public health system As far as the situation is concerned, almost half of Austrians are (very) satisfied. A higher level of satisfaction can be found in the age group of 16 to 35 years and among the highly educated. Almost a fifth is (very) dissatisfied. The main reasons for this are the long waiting times for appointments and the lack of doctors with a health insurance contract.
  • Deterioration of care: In addition, 58 percent recognize a shortage of statutory health insurance providers in general practice and 71 percent in other disciplines. Overall, two out of five Austrians have observed a deterioration in medical care over the past year, and only eight percent believe that this has developed in a positive direction.
