After five months of war, Hamas estimates the damage at $30 billion

Date:

According to the Hamas-controlled government, war damage in the Gaza Strip amounts to 30 billion dollars (27.44 billion euros). The government media agency announced this on Saturday. The estimate covers the damage caused by the Israeli army to residential buildings, commercial facilities and infrastructure such as roads, electricity and water lines and sewers in more than five months of war.

The information could not be independently verified. However, UN organizations estimate that 70 to 80 percent of the buildings in Gaza city have been destroyed by the fighting. Israel is waging a brutal war against Hamas after terrorists from the Islamic organization and other extremist groups attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing around 1,200 people.

Number of civilian casualties calls for criticism
Part of Israel’s warfare involves massive bombing of cities and residential areas in the densely populated Gaza Strip. Allies such as the US criticize the intensity of Israel’s military action, which also causes many casualties among the civilian population. The Israeli army claims it intends to destroy Hamas.

The Islamists would hide behind the civilian population and operate military installations, weapons depots and command posts in the middle of residential areas. The military also believes it is necessary to destroy a network of hundreds of kilometers of tunnels built by Hamas. Bunkers and tunnels were often located beneath civilian facilities such as hospitals.
