Italian emergency services are still desperately trying to fight the forest fires in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. A policewoman was hit by a tree and died.
Just an hour’s drive from the Austrian border, fierce forest fires are raging in Italy. “In the meantime, the flames have spread to the Kanaltal”, reports “Krone” editor Jennifer Kapellari, who gets a picture of the situation in Monfalcone. But most of the fires could be brought under control, according to the local fire department.
Ignite new fires
Despite this, the fire brigade is not able to get all the fires under control. “A new fire has broken out on the Slovenian border,” said a firefighter. There are currently about 300 emergency services on permanent duty.
According to the first “Krone” information, emergency services are also bundled in Slovenia. Forest fires are also raging here in the karst area.
Police officer killed in action
The devastating wildfires have already claimed one human life. An Italian policewoman who volunteered to extinguish the fire was killed. “It’s a terrible tragedy!” says Gianmarco Carpino of the Duino Police. The 56-year-old was killed by a tree while cleaning up in Prepotto. Only in 2021 did the policewoman receive an award for her commitment to civil defense and she was deputy police chief at the Cividale police station.
