Two types of status – The Netherlands wants to shield the asylum law

Date:

The Dutch Parliament wants to sharpen the asylum law considerably. Both the country without valid newspapers and help for these people must become punishable.

In the future there will be two types of asylum status: refugees from war or disasters and people who are pursued for individual reasons, such as ethnic descent. The residence permit must be shortened from five to three years and the reunification of the family must also be drastically limited.

The House of Representatives of Parliament mainly accepted the controversial legislative proposals on Thursday. This should make it much more difficult to get asylum in the Netherlands. Approximately twelve percent of migrants who come to the country every year are asylum seekers. In 2024 there were 32,000 asylum seekers and approximately 10,000 aftermath family members. In the first three months of 2025, the figures went back drastically by 50 percent. Similar developments are currently available in other European countries.

Coalition is bursting into dispute
The initiator of the tightening of the Asylum Act was the populist Geert Wilders of the radical rights. He had participated for the first time in a government with his Party for Freedom and wanted to maintain the “strictest asylum law of all time”. In June, however, the coalition burst through the dispute over asylum. New elections are planned for the end of October.

Lawyers said the new decided measures were legally doubtful and practically not had to be implemented. Before the law can come into force, the permission of the Senate of Parliament is necessary. This will probably not be discussed until autumn.
