Wiener Linien balance – Floods had “an impact like never before” on public transport

Date:

Vienna also had to deal with an extraordinary flood last weekend. The Vienna River, normally a trickle, swelled to a raging river and burst its banks in Penzing. The Danube Canal and the Liesing were also badly affected. The flooding also had serious consequences for public transport. Now the Wiener Linien is taking stock…

According to the city transport company, Wiener Linien had a total of 700 employees working on the flooding last weekend. 400 sandbags were stacked and 12.8 tons of stop beams were installed. Still, 960,000 liters of water had to be pumped out and five kilometers of metro track had to be cleaned.

Damage kept as low as possible
It was emphasized that the damage to the public transport infrastructure can ultimately be kept as low as possible. The high water alarm plan regulates the water levels at which protective measures must be taken and the work must be interrupted, as was the case on several metro lines for several days.

Nearly a million liters of water were pumped away
In addition to the barriers with sandbags and dam beams, the overhead lines and the current rails were also dismantled or de-energised and reassembled after dismantling the barriers. 17 locations had to be monitored 24 hours a day due to water ingress. In total, almost a million litres of water were pumped away at twelve locations.

Metro route examined for damage
Until the closed metro lines were released, all routes, totaling more than 40 kilometers, were walked and checked for damage.

Wiener Linien emphasized that there is also a lot to do on the surface. 50 kilometers of tram tracks were cleaned with sweepers and the breakdown service was called for 50 operations.

For example, fallen trees had to be removed and a major problem on lines 40 and 41 was solved within 36 hours. There is good news from the construction site on Universitätsstrasse: According to the broadcast, lines 43 and 44 will be able to resume their route to the Schottentor from Saturday.

The water was up to ten meters high
On the U2 construction site in Pilgramgasse, cleaning work was still ongoing on Thursday. The water there was up to ten meters high on Sunday evening.

Once the cleaning work is completed, the tunnel and station structures of the U2 extension will be inspected. The next steps and schedule for the metro construction site can then be determined, the report said.
