The report of an alleged sighting of a poisonous African tree snake in Braderup is currently causing concern. A dog was bitten and died. It cannot be ruled out that a snake bite could be the cause.
It is said that a poisonous snake roams around a village near Niebüll. It could be a boomslang: an African snake that is mainly active during the day and prefers to stay in trees or bushes.
However, when asked by the NDR, a spokeswoman from the office in Südtondern explained that such a specimen had not been seen in Braderup. However, the municipality of Braderup (district of North Frisia) warned on Facebook (see message below) about the alleged sighting and asked the population (also) to take good care of children and animals.
In Oeversee, sniffer dogs picked up the boomslang’s trail in June using a scent sample. The specially trained species sniffer dogs were trained with snake skin for this purpose.
In July, experts placed six fish traps in surrounding trees, also using snakeskin as bait.
However, the animal has not yet been caught. The area where the snake is said to be located is approximately 600 to 700 meters away from residential areas, according to NDR.
