From flood victim to fraud victim: criminal gangs are using the opportunity to profit from the needs of others. Authorities warn of fake police officers, illegal garbage collectors and looters…
Especially in the hardest hit state of Lower Austria, there are more and more reports that ‘craftsmen’ from all over the world are offering their services. In such cases, special caution is required!
An example – representative of many – from Pixendorf in the Tulln district: Two men of southern origin arrived in a white van at a stricken family and offered to clean the heating valves as a service. But at such an absurd price that the flood victims had the presence of mind to refuse and inform the police.
To avoid getting scammed, here are some tips:
- Check on the Internet, for example under ‘Companies A to Z’ of the Chamber of Commerce (www.wko.at), whether the company actually exists.
- Under no circumstances may you pay an advance.
- As a general rule, do not allow strangers into your home, especially not unsupervised.
- Don’t overpay and always ask for an invoice.
Increased patrol services in affected regions
The ‘flood gangs’ devise a wide range of scams. Criminals also like to pose as employees of numerous governments, gas and electricity suppliers or even banks. They are well-trained, always friendly and courteous, and inspire trust – only to undermine their victims.
The water has receded in most places after the flood of the century, and now the garbage collection dominates the scene. Broken items from thousands of flooded cellars are brought out. This in turn attracts illegal waste collectors looking for something useful.
Insurance problems as a result
The problem is that in many cases the insurance company still has to inspect damaged appliances (for example refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, computers or TVs). If they have been stolen in the meantime, the victims usually turn a blind eye.
The police are calling on you to be vigilant and report anything suspicious immediately. In the flood zones of Lower Austria, patrols have also been expanded to demonstrate presence – and to deter looters.
