Smuggler behind the wheel – Family from Turkey stopped while trying to escape

Date:

An illegal refugee transport ran into a radar check in Burgenland. The suspected smuggler behind the wheel fled into the vineyards. The Turkish family was taken to Schattendorf.

On Tuesday, police routinely conducted a “sharp operation” against speeders in the Oberpullendorf district. In the Neckenmarkt, officers noticed a black car late in the afternoon because the driver was holding a mobile phone in his hand while driving. While a patrol car started the chase, the car with a Hungarian license plate slowed down and stopped on a freight road.

The man fled
Suddenly, the man behind the wheel jumped out of the car and ran to the nearby vineyards. The Ford Focus was fully occupied. The prisoners, including two minors, did not speak a word of German. Only later did it turn out that the six arrested refugees were a Kurdish-Turkish family. None of them had any identity cards or travel documents with them.

The search is underway
Because there was a strong suspicion that the driver had been hired as a smuggler, a manhunt was immediately launched. Air support was requested to strengthen the search for the escaped suspect.

A police helicopter took off and circled widely in the border area. The suspected accomplice of a smuggling gang was dressed in dark clothing and was about 30 years old. The unknown person could not be traced for the time being. The Turkish family was taken to the army in Schattendorf for care. Further investigations are still ongoing.

More than 1,400 migrants have been arrested so far
Since January, 1,411 immigrants have been registered in Burgenland, including the current case. So far, 19 smugglers have been arrested. Experienced officials assume that the number of illegal refugee transports will increase this autumn.
