There is a cautious zero on the Leitha in the Neusiedl district. The weirs are still alert and there are sandbags in reserve. But the situation should ease.
While there was still hectic activity in Zurndorf and Nickelsdorf on Wednesday, the situation has now calmed down. You are still ‘gun-ready’, but you dare to catch your breath, says district fire chief Anton Kandelsdorfer. In total, almost 300 firefighters were on duty on Wednesday to fill sandbags and reinforce the dams in Zurndorf and Nickelsdorf. A total of around 20,000 sandbags have already been placed. There are more than 100 pallets of filled sandbags in reserve.
Bridge still closed
On Thursday, there was a beautiful picture. The highest water level was reached in nearby Deutsch Haslau in Lower Austria. The community is separated from Potzneusiedl in Burgenland by only a bridge. This bridge has been closed since Tuesday and will probably remain so. “We are still at a water level of 5.20 meters,” says mayor Franz Werdenich. Only when the water has dropped below five meters can the connection be reopened. In Bruckneudorf, the level is already dropping noticeably and the sandbag barrier is holding. In Gattendorf, the armed forces cleared a blockade on Wednesday. There are only minor flooding.
Dam leaks more than two kilometers
In Zurndorf, the fields were under water, but on the village side everything is dry. The bridge in Leithagasse is still closed due to the high water level. In Nickelsdorf, the dam is leaking for about two kilometers. The road construction department is working on reinforcements here, while a platoon of the disaster control service of the Eisenstadt-Milieu district fire brigade has secured the Nickelsdorf sewage treatment plant with sandbags.
