In Whitesburg, Kentucky, a sheriff shot and killed a district judge in the courthouse on Thursday. There had apparently been a fight between the two men beforehand. The 43-year-old sheriff was arrested without incident and charged with murder.
According to local newspaper The Mountain Eagle, Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines entered the courthouse that afternoon and told staff he needed to speak with Judge Kevin Mulins. The men then went to the district judge’s office, where the fatal shots were fired a short time later.
The judge was shot several times
According to preliminary investigations, the sheriff fired multiple shots at the 54-year-old district judge. He then emerged from the office with his hands raised. Stines was handcuffed in the lobby — without incident. No one else was injured.
Mullins, who served as a judge for 15 years, died at the scene. According to information from the Washington Post, there were about 50 people in the courthouse in Whitesburg – a rural town of about 1,700 people – at the time of the bloody afternoon crime.
Prosecutor: “Wave of sympathy”
The fatal shooting in Whitesburg sent shock waves through the small Appalachian town. The county’s chief prosecutor spoke of an outpouring of sympathy when he recused himself and his office from investigating the case, citing bias stemming from his family ties to Mullins.
