Inadequate research – animal rights activists defend themselves against accusations

Date:

After revelations about livestock transports to Algeria, “Rinderschik Austria” accused animal rights activists from Vorarlberg of inadequate investigation. They don’t want to accept that.

When it comes to animal welfare, Tobias Giesinger doesn’t joke. For years he has worked with the “Association Against Animal Factories” to expose inadequate or downright scandalous conditions, especially in agriculture. He recently co-founded the research startup “The Marker” with Ann Kathrin Freude, which publishes similar grievances.

This startup is now under fire after the ORF “Report” broadcast video footage of a livestock transport from Austria to Algeria. The umbrella organization of Austrian livestock farmers criticizes the article for its “serious journalistic shortcomings”. For example, the cows that were loaded onto a ship (and some of them died) were not Austrian at all. It is also not clear from the images that the animals are actually ‘suffering’, says ‘Rinderschik Austria’, among others, about the recordings shown.

The statement has also been sent to Parliament
Tobias Giesinger and Ann Kathrin Freude do not want to abandon these accusations and also respond with a written statement, which has also been sent to the Chamber of Agriculture and the relevant federal ministry. They refute the livestock farmers’ allegations point by point. For example, the Austrian ear tags of the loaded cows can be seen in the raw material that “The Marker” supplied to ORF.

“Factual discussion”
Giesinger and Freude also took the opportunity to ask “Rinderschik Austria” a few open questions about the practice of exporting animals to Algeria – with the wish that the answers would be made available to the public by January 26. The team at “The Marker” hopes that the further information will allow a “factual discussion”. It will be interesting to see the answers.

The issue of animal transport continues to cause great outrage and extremely heated debates between agricultural and animal welfare representatives across Austria.
