On Friday, the Israeli military carried out a so-called “selective bombing” on Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, an attack that left three dead and 17 wounded amid increased clashes with the Shiite militia party. Hezbollah and in light of fears of spreading the conflict in the Middle East.
According to information gathered by the Lebanese state news agency NNA, the bombing hit an apartment building in the area of Dahieh, located in the south of Beirut and with a Shiite majority, with great influence from Hezbollah.
Israel has not commented at this time on who the target of the attack might be, although sources cited by Lebanese television network LBCI suggest that it Ibrahim Akilwhich carries a reward of seven million dollars from the United States.
Akil, alias Tahsinis a member of Hezbollah’s Jihad Council, the group’s main military body. The man was part of the Islamic Jihad Organization, which claimed responsibility for the 1983 bombings of the U.S. embassy in Beirut and a hostage situation that same decade.
On July 30, Israel already attacked Beirutwhen he killed a Hezbollah commander, identified as Fuad Sukur –an operation that also resulted in the killing of an Iranian adviser and five civilians, including two children–, one day before the assassination in the Iranian capital Tehran of the leader of the political wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Ismail Haniyean operation also attributed to the Israeli authorities.
The bombing also comes amid a dramatic rise in tensions after two days coordinated explosions of communications equipment —the 17th and September 18, attacks allegedly carried out by Israel that have almost disappeared 40 dead and about 3,000 injuredaccording to the most recent balance sheet of the Lebanese authorities.
