The Israeli military launched massive airstrikes on the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon on Saturday night. “Dozens” of warplanes were involved in the operation against Hezbollah targets. The US called on its citizens to leave Lebanon while commercial flights were still operating.
“Given the unpredictability of the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel and the recent explosions throughout Lebanon, including in Beirut, the U.S. Embassy strongly advises U.S. citizens to leave Lebanon while commercial options remain available,” the U.S. State Department said Saturday. The Austrian Foreign Ministry asked Austrian citizens to leave Lebanon in August.
“In the last hour, we launched a large-scale attack in southern Lebanon after detecting Hezbollah preparations to shell Israeli territory,” army spokesman Daniel Hagari said.
Earlier on Saturday, the military announced that it had destroyed thousands of rocket launchers in southern Lebanon, saying they were “ready for immediate launch toward Israeli territory.”
The army said late in the evening that about 400 targets had been struck since midday, including operational rocket launch pads and “terrorist infrastructure” in several areas of southern Lebanon. According to Israeli military reports, dozens of projectiles were fired from Lebanon toward northern Israel during the day. Hezbollah said it fired dozens of rockets at Israel’s Ramat David air base in the north of the country. The Israeli military said it intercepted the rockets.
According to Israeli media reports, there were consequences in northern Israel. In Kiryat Bialik near the port city of Haifa, two houses were hit, the news site ynet reported. There were also rocket alerts in Haifa itself. The Magen David Adom emergency service said three people were injured in the attacks. Several others were in shock.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, hundreds of Hezbollah militia beepers and walkie-talkies exploded simultaneously in Lebanon. According to current information, 39 people were killed and about 3,000 others were injured in the explosions, which occurred in two waves and are attributed to Israel.
