Conversation with Vatican – Zelenskyj: Ceasefire does not lead to peace

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected a ceasefire as ineffective. A ceasefire and a freeze on the conflict would not lead to peace, he told Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi on Tuesday. This had traveled to Kiev.

According to the Vatican, the cardinal should help “reduce tensions in the conflict in Ukraine”. However, in the early months of the war, he was criticized for not explicitly blaming the Russian side for the war. Now Zuppi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have discussed “humanitarian relations between Ukraine and the Holy See”.

According to Zelenskyy, only “isolation and pressure” on Russia can bring peace, but the Vatican can “make an effective contribution” to freeing Ukrainian prisoners of war and rescuing children “deported” to Russia. In the past, the president has repeatedly called for the complete withdrawal of Russian troops to negotiate peace.

African peace initiative wants to mediate
After Zuppi, an African peace initiative led by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa plans to travel to Russia and Ukraine in a few days. The African heads of state also want to talk about a ceasefire and a lasting peace with Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. It was hoped that a ‘road map to peace’ could be drawn up. Discussions on this have already taken place.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in May that Russia was ready to “listen very carefully to any proposals that would make it possible to regulate the situation in Ukraine.” prices feared. About a fifth of Ukraine’s territory is currently under Russian control.
