Delivery confusion – postal service botched hundreds of election letters in Salzburg

Date:

Hundreds of Salzburg residents are still waiting in vain for their election information letters so that they can apply for their voting cards for September 29.

“Time is running out, what is the point of all this?” Wolfgang Stark feels planted. The Salzburger has been waiting for his official election information for weeks. With the letter he could apply for a voting card for the vote on September 29. “I am in Graz for the elections for the National Council. “I would like to cast my vote, but somehow everyone is doing everything they can to make sure it doesn’t work,” says the 75-year-old.

Large crowd
There is a huge rush for voting cards in the city of Mozart. Almost 15,000 people have already registered for this. But: it was not only Wolfgang Stark who had problems with the delivery of the official election information letters. According to the Salzburg magistrate, almost 300 people did not receive them.

“I really don’t understand it, I get my other mail regularly,” Stark wonders. The postal service itself apologized for the problems and promised to deliver election information by the end of this week. Wolfgang Stark, however, continues to wait in vain. “I actually always vote with an absentee ballot, and that has never been a problem in the past.”

A small consolation: with your personal passport number you can also apply for the voting card via the website of the city of Salzburg. You can also pick up the card personally at Mirabell Palace until 27 September and hand it in immediately.

Postal problems with absentee ballots are not new
Unfortunately, parcels around the election date in Salzburg are not uncommon. After the federal presidential election in the autumn of 2022, a number of ‘Krone’ readers contacted us. Although they had applied for their voting cards in time, they never received them. ‘We feel cheated of our right to vote’, they mutter in unison. Because: Without a voting card they were not allowed to vote, and even going to the actual polling station would have been completely pointless. Wolfgang Stark: “I’m not giving up hope yet. But it will be tight.”
