The heavy storm is still leaving its mark all over Austria. ÖBB is also still struggling with this. Because it has now become known that the ‘new’ Western Railway will be out of service for months.
Accordingly, the “new” route between Vienna and St. Pölten is impassable. The extent of the damage only became clear in recent days after the fire brigade pumped away the water, which was one meter high.
The damage is in the three-digit million range, explains Judith Engel, CEO of ÖBB-Infrastructure AG.
Electrical systems defective
According to Engel, it can be assumed that the electrical installations in the 2.5-kilometre-long Atzenbrugg tunnel will have to be completely rebuilt. There is still no power supply there, as well as at the Tullnerfeld train station. Two KHD fire brigade trains with 100 emergency services were deployed to clear the Atzenbrugg tunnel.
Lockdown extended
Originally, the ‘new’ western route, one of Austria’s most important railway lines, was to be closed for the entire month of August 2024 and reopen in early September. The reason was extensive maintenance work.
“Old” route open from October 10
However, the heavy storm intervened and has been causing closure for months now. When the route will be accessible again is currently unclear. The ‘old’ western route through the Vienna Woods should be accessible again on two tracks from October 10, Engel predicted on Monday.
