Whether on the mountain or on the water: the solstice weekend was already celebrated extensively in the Salzburg region on Saturday. The “Krone” has the most beautiful pictures of the special evening.
Welcome summer with glowing enthusiasm – that’s the tradition of the midsummer fires. Every year around June 21, when the longest day and the shortest night meet, dozens of bonfires grace the mountain ranges in the Salzburger Land.
Starry night provided a special spectacle
Its use originally dates back to the Middle Ages. Records go back to the 14th century. At that time, farmers gave thanks for a rich harvest on the land.
The water rescue team in Bischofshofen did not celebrate the solstice on the mountains, but swimming in the Salzach. “50 water rescuers from the surrounding neighborhoods swam with torches,” says organizer Markus Gewolf. “Thank God we had a clear starry sky this year,” said Christian Hofer, who played at the Eisenbahner Stadtkapelle in Saalfelden.
