According to Lebanese sources, an Israeli strike on southern Beirut on Monday night targeted the Hezbollah commander of the southern front. An Israeli drone targeted Ali Karake, number three in Hezbollah’s military leadership, according to people close to the pro-Iranian militia.
The Israeli military recently announced that it had carried out a “targeted attack” in the capital Beirut. It was the second time since Friday that the Israeli military attacked a southern suburb of Beirut.
Among the dead was Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Akil, head of the elite Radwan unit. Hezbollah said a total of 16 commanders were killed in the attack.
Netanyahu with message to citizens
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Lebanese citizens to take the Israeli army’s evacuation calls seriously and vowed to return after the fighting ends. “Israel’s war is not against you,” Netanyahu said in a video message. “It is against Hezbollah,” the prime minister said.
The Israeli army has been calling for people to leave the danger zone since the morning hours. “Please leave the danger zone now,” Netanyahu warned urgently: “Once our operation is over, you can safely return to your homes.”
Conflicts continue to escalate
Even before Akil’s killing and the violent mutual attacks over the weekend, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah had escalated with the explosions of hundreds of militia beepers and walkie-talkies in Lebanon.
Hezbollah blames Israel for the explosions. The Jerusalem government has not yet commented on who was responsible for the blasts, which killed dozens of people and injured thousands.
