Commissions underway – Long process of dealing with flood damage until Christmas

Date:

In St. Pölten, which was particularly affected by the floods, damage commissions have been on their way to the victims since Friday – probably until Christmas. So far, 1,000 cases of damage have been reported.

Usually, nothing can be done within an hour when the damage commission of the city of St. Pölten visits the affected people. Not only is the financial damage caused by the once-in-a-century flood too great, but also the suffering of the population, which the team of city politicians, experts and municipal employees wants to communicate. So far, almost 1,000 claims have been reported, and the number is increasing every day. Therefore, it will probably take until Christmas before the real extent of the damage is documented.

The first committees have been travelling through the capital since Friday and have had to be trained in recent days. The final damage is recorded and recorded in photos, so that payment from the disaster fund is possible. “This is done in addition to the ongoing municipal services and is carried out by people who are sometimes personally affected,” says the city hall.

Urgent support required
Mayor Matthias Stadler is demanding that the residents of St. Pölten receive help from the federal government quickly. He is campaigning for an “unbureaucratic, staggered aid package” of up to 10,000 euros per household. However, this demand for rapid aid contradicts the current work of the commission, some of those affected criticize. Because after the start on Friday, the weekend dawned – and no one went out…
