From 1 October, the minimum academic achievement of 16 ECTS credits will come into effect for all bachelor’s and diploma programmes that started in the winter semester 2022/23 or later. Anyone who does not achieve this within the first four semesters will lose their place at the university. After two years, you can reapply, directly to another institution.
The threshold of 16 ECTS as a minimum study performance for first-year students, on which the ÖVP and the Greens were ultimately able to agree, is of course not particularly high.
Completing a bachelor’s degree of typically 180 ECTS would take 22.5 years at this rate; students with disabilities are exempt from the minimum course requirements.
According to the law, the possibility to restrict access to overcrowded master’s programmes will be further tightened this academic year. However, the entrance exams for the master’s programme must first be anchored in the performance agreements between the universities and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

According to the ministry, universities must specifically explain why they need access restrictions for a particular subject due to specific problems (e.g. insufficient space or staff). Possible master’s admission procedures will be used for the first time in the winter semester of 2025. Universities are currently only allowed to conduct admission procedures for English-language master’s programmes.

- After a soft start last year, the winter semester is starting Linz Digital University IT:You the first PhD course: The English-language course offered together with the University of Linz is called “Digital Transformation”, the topic is learning and teaching via AI.
- In the Salzburg Union Geologist Bernhard Fügenschuh, most recently vice-rector at the University of Innsbruck, will be the new rector. At the University of Klagenfurt, economist Ada Pellert will take over from Oliver Vitouch, currently chairman of the University Conference (uniko), on 1 December.
