“Free travel” is now once again the motto for all ships on the Danube in Austria. The closure due to the storms has been completely lifted.
The longest time to solve a technical problem due to flooding was at the Greifenstein lock in Lower Austria. The right chamber of the lock has been open to traffic since Tuesday morning 09:30. The left chamber should be operational again during the day. The passage now works without problems. This means that shipping is possible again on the entire Danube, all barriers are lifted and the locks are intact.
“Now it’s that time again: free travel on the Danube. “As of today, shipping on Austria’s most important waterway is fully possible,” said Minister of Transport and Climate Protection Leonore Gewessler (Greens) in a press release.
Several regions are still disaster areas
Eastern Austria in particular was hit by heavy storms with storms and huge amounts of rain last weekend. Several regions in Lower Austria are still disaster areas, shipping and parts of the railway traffic came to a standstill.
