More than thirty people died in the South Asian countries of Bangladesh and India when the tropical cyclone ‘Remal’ passed by. Further fatalities cannot be ruled out; rescue efforts are still ongoing.
Before the cyclone made landfall in India and Bangladesh on Monday evening, hundreds of thousands of people in coastal areas were taken to emergency shelters for safety. The storm brought heavy rainfall that turned roads into rivers, toppled trees and electricity poles, and damaged many simple houses.
The storm has now weakened, according to the weather services of both countries. In the affected areas, schools, banks and authorities remained partially closed on Tuesday.
Climate change regularly brings storms
India and Bangladesh regularly experience storms that cause power outages, destruction and flooding. Experts say the risk of severe storms is increasing worldwide due to climate change.
