Before the brown bear “Mitko” was transported to Austria, he was euthanized in Slovenia – to the horror of the animal protection organization “Four Paws”.
“We are shocked, deeply saddened and incredibly angry because the death of our protégé could have been prevented by quicker action by the authorities,” said Eva Rosenberg, CEO of Four Paws. For two years, the local animal welfare organization tried to free ‘Mitko’ from torture at the Abram Tourist Farm in Nanos, Slovenia. After that, he was supposed to live at the Meister-Petz shelter in Arbesbach in the Hohen Waldviertel (Lower Austria).
But the animal’s heartless owner thwarted all plans by euthanizing the beloved ‘Mitko’ without mercy – and only because the bear, crammed into a cramped cage, was supposedly ‘feeling unwell’.
However, it is more likely that the bear tamer wanted to avoid an inspection by a new official from the responsible ministry in the capital Ljubljana, as there was even talk of confiscating the animal after a massive campaign by Austrian bear protection groups.
