Refugees are moving into 110 well-equipped new apartments in Favoriten. Neighbors fear safety problems and feel ignored and disadvantaged. Now that a first small protest has taken place, the signature campaign continues.
The first spontaneous meeting took place on Wednesday morning in front of Favoritenstrasse 185 in the 10th district. About thirty residents expressed their displeasure with signs (inscription: “Rental madness for Viennese, luxury building for asylum seekers!”). As reported, refugees will move into the brand new residential building – in 110 well-equipped apartments with a kitchen, air conditioning and a balcony or terrace.
Residents fear safety issues and often live in less posh accommodations themselves. And feel disadvantaged. Tenants of an adjacent municipal building are collecting signatures against the project. So far, about 200 have come together in two days.
Support of FPÖ
The FPÖ supports protests: “While countless Viennese have to live in moldy municipal apartments and don’t even get new windows, asylum seekers who have not worked here a day are getting brand new luxury apartments,” says Blue chairman Dominik Nepp.
The Diakonie has rented the building for 18 months. Together with the Vienna Social Fund (FSW), recognized refugees and families must be made suitable for the labor market.
The Party for Freedom is submitting a municipal request to city council member Peter Hacker. The mandates want to know, among other things, whether and to what extent the taxpayer will have to pay for this project. They want to make clear how much rent will be charged to newcomers (special price?) and whether Austrian citizens, who are also dependent on cheap housing, will not be disadvantaged. The answers are certainly exciting, but they will take time.
