Hezbollah in the crosshairs – Israel now officially threatens a ground offensive

Date:

After the first Hezbollah rocket was fired at Tel Aviv, the Israeli army is threatening a ground offensive in Lebanon. To achieve this, the infrastructure of the radical Islamist militia must first be destroyed, Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi said on Wednesday.

An Israeli military spokesman described the rocket launch as an “escalation.” “It is the first time ever that a Hezbollah rocket has reached the Tel Aviv area.” Hezbollah is “clearly trying to escalate the situation.” The pro-Iranian militia had earlier said it had fired a Kader 1 rocket “which was aimed at the Mossad headquarters on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.”

Retaliation for beeper explosions
The Israeli headquarters of the foreign intelligence service was “responsible for the assassination of executives and the explosion of pagers and wireless devices.” The explosions killed 39 people and injured nearly 3,000 others early last week.

In light of the ongoing fighting with Hezbollah, the Israeli army has ordered two reserve brigades to the north of the country. “The IDF is calling up two reserve brigades for operational operations in the northern region,” the military said on Wednesday. “This will make it possible to continue the fight against the Hezbollah terrorist organization, defend the State of Israel and create conditions for the return of the residents of northern Israel to their homeland,” the report said.

Concerns about the new Gaza
On Wednesday, the UN Security Council wanted to discuss the situation in Lebanon during an emergency meeting. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also wanted to participate in the meeting at 18:00 local time (Thursday 12:00 CEST). On Tuesday, at the start of the general debate in the UN General Assembly in New York, he warned that everything must be done “to prevent Lebanon from becoming a new Gaza”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will also speak at the general debate, has postponed his departure to New York until Thursday, his office said. He announced Tuesday that Israel would “continue to attack Hezbollah.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in Tehran that Israel’s targeted killing of Hezbollah commanders “would not bring the militia to its knees.” Hezbollah’s authority, capabilities and strength cannot be seriously damaged by the loss of these martyrs, Khamenei said.
