A previously unknown scammer deceived passers-by with a devious plan. Between January and March, he allegedly displayed fake Bitcoin paper wallets – better known as fake documents – in public places at various locations in Vienna to simulate the loss of these wallets.
The suspect is said to have repeatedly displayed counterfeit Bitcoin paper wallets, i.e. false documents in transparent plastic covers, in public places in the Vienna districts of Wieden, Margareten and Mariahilf. The man apparently faked the loss of these wallets.
The finder probably counted on easy money: the victims of this fraud scanned the QR code that was visible to these customers and ended up on a fake website, where they were asked to provide their email address and telephone number.
Error message leads to further transaction
In return for payment, the victims were made to believe that they would receive the amount in the account in return for payment. But it is not that easy to earn money. After the transfer, the victims apparently received an error message about the transaction, in which they were usually asked to make further transfers.
According to the investigating authorities, a photo has been secured so far. According to the Vienna police, the current extent of the damage is not yet known; other previously unknown victims are also possible. Information about the suspect is requested.
