In order to relieve the pressure on troops at home, the Ukrainian army surprisingly launched an attack on the Russian border region of Kursk in early August. In fact, the Russian advance in the Donbass may have slowed down somewhat. Nevertheless, President Vladimir Putin’s army continues to report new military successes. According to its own statements, it has now taken over another location near the strategically important city of Pokrovsk.
We are talking about Ukraine, near the city of Donetsk, which is now “liberated,” the Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Telegram. The conquest of Ukraine could be a more important step forward.
Before the Russian offensive began, the town had a population of about 10,000. With the capture, the Russian army is moving towards the cities of Selydove and Kurakhove. Moscow is also aiming to capture the nearby mining town of Pokrovsk, which is of great importance for the logistical supply of the Ukrainian army. So far, no confirmation of this has been received from the Ukrainian leadership.
Drone attack on Kiev
The eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk is part of the Donbass. In early September, Russian President Vladimir Putin once again stressed that the complete conquest of this region was the highest priority. The capital Kiev was also targeted again on Thursday. According to official information, about ten Russian combat drones were shot down. The falling debris damaged cars and caused fires, which were subsequently extinguished, according to the Ukrainian civil defense. The air raid siren in Kiev lasted five and a half hours. In the Mykolaiv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, energy facilities were hit and there were some power outages.
According to Ukrainian information, the Russian Air Force also fired four hypersonic “Kinshal” (dagger) missiles in the morning. The target was the city of Starokostiantyniv in the western Ukrainian region of Khmelnytskyi. There is a military airport there where F-16 fighter jets supplied by the West are reportedly stationed.
US military aid is being stepped up
The latest news from the frontline reached Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky during his stay in the United States, where he will be received by US President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday after his speech to the United Nations General Assembly. Zelensky wants to present a plan to Biden and his deputy Kamala Harris during joint meetings on how to achieve Ukraine’s victory in the Russian war of aggression and a just peace. Biden also wants to talk to Zelensky about the “recent developments on the battlefield.”
Even before the meeting, Biden pledged new military aid to Ukraine worth about $8 billion, or about 7.15 billion euros. Washington is Kiev’s biggest supporter in the war against Moscow. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the US has provided Ukraine with about $175 billion (about 158 billion euros) in military and economic aid.
