South-eastern Europe has experienced its hottest summer since records began, according to a preliminary estimate. The EU’s climate change service Copernicus said there were 66 days of “severe heat stress” between June and August.
Southeastern Europe includes countries such as Albania, Greece and Bulgaria. So far, they have had an average of 29 days of severe heat stress in the summer. This time, record temperatures were recorded in areas including Fennoscandia. This peninsula includes Scandinavia, Finland and the Kola Peninsula, which belongs to Russia.
“The extreme temperatures in regions like South-East Europe are impacting the wellbeing of Europeans, as citizens in this region are experiencing more heat stress than ever before,” said Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of Copernicus.
Where it was cooler
However, in northwestern Europe (e.g. Netherlands, Ireland) average temperatures from June to August were close to or even below average.
There was also a stark contrast between individual regions in Europe. Most of the continent, especially the southeast, recorded below-average wet days. Other regions, such as northern Britain and the Baltic states, had up to 20 days more rain than average.
Low versus high water levels
In addition, differences in water levels were observed in the summer. 35 percent of European rivers had very low water levels, including some in southeastern Europe. Rivers in large parts of Central Europe supplied exceptionally large amounts of water.
According to the provisional balance, the Mediterranean Sea reached a record level. The water surface temperature on August 30 was an average of 28.45 degrees Celsius over the entire basin.
