Drought in the Po Valley – heat wave: Italy wants to drain Lake Garda

Date:

The drought in the Po Valley causes problems for farmers. Now water is rationed. Reservoirs are pumped out.

The extreme heat wave is leading to water shortages in the Po Valley. It has not rained for 110 days in some regions, pushing the Po River level to an all-time low. Agriculture is suffering the most from the worst drought in 70 years: according to the agricultural association Coldiretti, half of the cultivated areas are threatened and a third of the national agricultural production is at risk. The damage already amounts to almost two billion euros.

In the regions of Lombardy and Piemonte, 125 municipalities have been asked to stop or reduce the nightly supply of drinking water to households. Authorities are now considering pumping water from Lake Garda north to feed the Po Valley.

Spain can breathe a sigh of relief: temperatures are falling
A major concern in Germany too: A forest fire, which spread rapidly due to the wind, forced the inhabitants of two districts from their homes near the small town of Treuenbrietzen in Brandenburg. About 100 hectares of land have been affected.

Meanwhile, Spain can breathe easy. In many parts of the country, temperatures dropped below 40 degrees and in some areas even below 30 degrees.
