There have also been strict controls at the German border with Salzburg for almost two weeks. The announcement by German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser at the check at the local inspection “Krone” – the result raises many questions.
The border guards look bored at the car. They are engrossed in conversations; they are clearly not interested in the black station wagon with the Austrian license plate. Stricter controls have been in place at all German external borders for almost two weeks. This was announced by Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD).
What has changed for Austria, and especially for Salzburg, since then? Nothing. The German police have been on Walserberg since 2015 and check suspicious vehicles. They love buses and vans. Since then, the border posts have only caused annoying delays for commuters.
“In Austria, the checks are still only temporary,” says Jan-Uwe Polte of the federal police. His colleagues are mainly on the highway near Walserberg. The intersections at Dürrnberg, Grödig and Kleiner Walserberg are largely deserted. “That does not mean that we do not monitor here,” said Polte. The Germans increasingly rely on veiled searches and checks in the interior. The strongest checks take place on the track. Almost everyone is checked when crossing by train.
Despite Faeser’s promise, everything else is more or less left to chance. This was only the case on Friday. Patrol officers noticed a suspicious car with Hungarian license plates and caught a tractor-trailer near Bad Reichenhall after a wild chase – the “Krone” reported. A pure coincidence.
Faeser also faces opposition from the agents themselves. She is convinced that the tightened controls have not slowed down illegal migration in the slightest.
