A homeowner in Vienna-Floridsdorf used a warning shot from his gun to scare off a burglar on Sunday evening. The 39-year-old is said to have previously broken open a screen on a patio door that he found at the crime scene with a garden rake.
It was around 4 a.m. when a 78-year-old homeowner on Dominik-Wölfel-Gasse in Vienna-Floridsdorf woke up with a start – and immediately became alarmed.
Warning shot into the air by pensioners
In fact, a dark figure had emerged from the dawn and grabbed a garden rake lying around from his victim’s shed.
But the criminal did the math without the pensioner. The perpetrator – he was later identified as a Polish citizen – would have already broken open the fly screen, but then the potential intruder was already looking down the barrel of a gun, which the man legally owns.
The pensioner bravely stormed out of the building and without hesitation fired a warning shot into the air.
Attempted escape without success
The criminal fled in shock. Through a joint search by officers from the Floridsdorf city police command, the service dog unit and WEGA troops, the 39-year-old was arrested and taken to a correctional facility.
Perpetrator possibly mentally ill
“During the interrogation, the alleged perpetrator stated gaps in his memory,” Dittrich reported on Monday. Further statements by the man that he “heard voices” would indicate a possible mental illness. The Vienna public prosecutor’s office ordered his admission to a prison.
