The article on the homepage of HAK Zwei in Salzburg, where partly masked students coolly pose with pistols, was only recently online. There is a lot of criticism about the handling of the extremely sensitive subject of weapons. The director explains the background.
What are weapons and masked faces doing on a school website? Everyone who opened the homepage of HAK Zwei in Salzburg on Thursday could not believe their eyes. Right on the homepage, masked students coolly posed with various weapons. In the middle of the group, the class teacher also seemed relaxed and youthful. No explanation was given as to how the subject was treated so thoughtlessly. The post only had the title with the short comment “Class photo.”
No one here should have realized how sensitive the subject of ‘guns in schools’ is. The Education Directorate has ordered the video to be removed again.
Students wanted to stand out in the photo shoot
Director Daniela Huber-Krimplstätter was away at a conference at the time. She says somewhat regretfully about the background of the photo campaign: “The students just wanted to look cool and stand out in a graduation photo.” But the campaign went completely wrong. The teacher involved should have stopped the students in their ideas.
According to Huber-Krimplstätter, internal school quality standards for publication on the school website were also circumvented. An illuminating conversation has already taken place: “The colleague has made a mistake here that should not happen this way.”
