Death during investigation – Three ex-US police officers found guilty

Date:

In the US, three former police officers have been found guilty of beating and fatally wounding African-American Tire Nichols in January 2023 (see video above). The 29-year-old was caught during a traffic stop in Memphis and died in hospital after being struck.

However, former police officers Bean, Haley and Smith were all acquitted of violating Nichols’ civil rights, resulting in death – the most serious charge. The jury found Haley guilty of violating rights causing bodily harm. There were also guilty verdicts for influencing witnesses. The exact verdict will not be announced until January. The ex-security forces risk a prison sentence of 20 years.

Murder case follows
Moreover, they continue to be tried at the federal level on charges including second-degree murder, a sort of intermediate level between manslaughter and murder.

As reported, 29-year-old Nichols was caught during a traffic stop in Memphis on January 7, 2023, and a total of five police officers beat him up. He died in hospital three days later. Both the accused officers and the victim are African-American. Weeks later, videos of the incident were released, sparking outrage and horror worldwide. The five involved were fired and charged.

Two former officers have already pleaded guilty. During the trial, jurors repeatedly watched the video, which showed police officers brutally beating Nichols, hitting him with a baton and kicking him repeatedly as the 29-year-old frantically screamed for his mother.
