Since late Thursday afternoon, a major search operation was underway for a German (21) who went missing in the area of the eastern peak of the Hohe Munde above Telfs. Emergency services discovered the young man’s body on Friday afternoon during a search flight.
The German, who had no mountain experience, left the Leutasch late Thursday morning towards the eastern summit (2592 m) of the Hohe Munde together with a companion of the same age under unfavorable external conditions and bad weather forecasts.
While the companion retreated and turned around around 2 p.m. due to the external conditions (snowfall, fog), the 21-year-old apparently wanted to go to the top.
Fell and slipped
The German probably fell and slipped at an altitude of 2,500 meters above sea level. He contacted his companion, who in turn made an emergency call to Germany. “The Tyrol control center was then informed about the Germans,” said a police spokesperson when asked by “Krone”.
Dangerous mission for mountain rescuers
Due to the weather, a search flight was not possible, so mountain rescuers from Telfs and Leutasch climbed to the suspected accident site in the late afternoon under difficult conditions. Telephone contact with the German was lost and the man was never found. For safety reasons, the search was initially ended around 9 p.m.
No terrestrial use possible on Friday
On Friday, the emergency services were again unable to climb due to snowfall, icy ground and fog. The first search flight was carried out late Friday morning. However, this was not a success.
Dragonfly used weather window – body discovered
In the afternoon, the Libelle Tirol police helicopter again used a weather window for a new search flight. In fact, the young man was discovered in the area of the eastern peak of the Munde. However, all help came too late for him. The 21-year-old did not survive the night.
However, due to the weather conditions, it was no longer possible for the Libelle Tirol to collect the body on Friday.
